Why is oral health so important for kids?

In honor of National Dental Hygiene Month in October, we want to talk about the importance of oral health for kids. Oral health is essential for overall health, cognitive development, and more. It’s never too early to start teaching your child how to take care of their teeth! In this blog, we will discuss three reasons why oral health is so important for children. We will also provide some tips on how to improve your child’s oral hygiene habits.

Maintain Overall Health

As parents, we want our children to be healthy and happy. Oral health is a vital part of overall health. Did you know that poor oral health can lend itself to other health conditions?

Promote Cognitive Development

Cognitive development is the process of learning and acquiring knowledge. A child’s oral health can impact their cognitive development in a few ways. First, if a child has poor oral health, they may miss school due to dental pain or infections. Second, children with poor oral health may have trouble concentrating on tasks and learning new information. Third, research has shown that children with poor oral health are more likely to have lower grades and test scores because of loss of focus.

Decrease the Risk of Preventable Conditions

Good oral hygiene can help prevent conditions like cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. Teaching your child to brush their teeth twice a day and floss once a day can help reduce their risk of these conditions.  And while your Dentist may not specialize in growth and development, they do see many children’s visits over the course of years, and can be in a good position to coordinate needs and care for other health professionals your child may utilize.

Instill Good Habits

It’s never too early to start teaching your child good oral hygiene habits. Helping your child develop good oral hygiene habits now will set them up for success in the future.

Improving Your Child’s Oral Hygiene Routine

There are a few easy ways to improve your child’s oral hygiene. First, make sure they brush their teeth twice a day and floss once a day. This teaches them the basics of oral hygiene and helps make these basic practices part of their daily routine.

Second, take them to the dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. The American Dental Association recommends that children see a dentist by their first birthday. After that, they should visit the dentist every six months.

Third, lead by example! Show your child how important oral hygiene is by taking care of your own teeth. Brush and floss your teeth with them, and let them see you visit the dentist for regular checkups.

Finally, be sure to watch their diet. Too much sugar, especially in sugar-filled and acidic drinks like soda pop will lead to cavities, and can have an impact on childhood diabetes and obesity issues. Instead encourage them to eat crunchy fruits and vegetables, which help clean their teeth and keep them healthy.  Also encourage them to drink water outside of routine meals, since this is good for their oral and overall health.

In Conclusion

In this blog, we discussed three reasons why oral health is so important for children. We also provided some tips on how to improve your child’s oral hygiene habits. Oral health is essential for children. We hope this blog has inspired you to take action and improve your child’s oral hygiene habits. Remember, it’s never too early to start teaching your child about the importance of taking care of their teeth!
