Single-Tooth Implant

What Is a Single-Tooth Implant?

A single-tooth implant provides a reliable, long-term solution for replacing a missing tooth while restoring full function and natural aesthetics. The treatment begins with the surgical placement of a titanium post into the jawbone, which serves as a sturdy artificial root. Over time, the post integrates with the surrounding bone, creating a secure foundation. After the healing period, a custom dental crown is attached, carefully designed to match the shape and color of your natural teeth for a seamless appearance.

Patients benefit from a replacement that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth. This option eliminates the need to modify adjacent teeth, which is often required for traditional bridges. It also supports jawbone health by providing the stimulation needed to prevent bone loss. At Altoona Smiles Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, each implant is carefully planned and placed to ensure a precise fit and long-term success. With consistent care and routine checkups, a single-tooth implant can offer decades of comfort and performance, helping you maintain a healthy, beautiful smile without compromising the integrity of your surrounding teeth.

Benefits of Single-Tooth Implants

  1. Natural Appearance
The crown is designed to match the color, shape, and size of your surrounding teeth. This seamless integration enhances your smile and restores your confidence with a replacement that looks and feels like a real tooth.
  2. Durable and Long-Lasting
With proper care, single-tooth implants can last for decades. The titanium post provides unmatched strength, making this a reliable, long-term solution that supports daily chewing, speaking, and smiling without worry.
  3. Preservation of Oral Health
Unlike bridges, implants don’t require support from neighboring teeth. They also stimulate the jawbone, preventing bone loss and maintaining the natural shape and structure of your face and bite alignment.

Narrative: Shows that single-tooth implants provide superior longevity compared to bridges, lasting 20+ years vs. 10-12 years. Even implants requiring bone grafting (18-25 years) outlast bridges. Bridge longevity is significantly compromised (7-10 years) if adjacent teeth are already compromised. This demonstrates implant superiority for long-term single-tooth replacement.

The office is modern and always clean. The staff is attentive and friendly. Our daughter (10) has severe orthodontic issues, and the Altoona Smiles staff has had no issues collaborating with her orthodontist's office and navigating our insurance policies. We were able to discuss a mutually agreed upon treatment plan, and were able to tailor the plan to match both our schedules and comfort needs. I would definitely recommend.

Questions Patients Ask About Single-Tooth Implants in Altoona

Why is a single-tooth implant better than a bridge for replacing one missing tooth?

A single-tooth implant preserves your two adjacent teeth, whereas a bridge requires those teeth to be prepared (permanently modified) to support the bridge. Implants have superior longevity (20-30 years vs. 10-12 years), and even if the implant crown needs replacement, the implant fixture itself typically lasts a lifetime. Implants prevent bone loss in the missing tooth area, whereas bridges don’t provide this benefit. Over time, an implant often represents better value than a bridge despite higher upfront cost.

What happens during single-tooth implant surgery?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. The Altoona Smiles team makes a small incision in the gum, carefully drills the jawbone to the precise depth and angle, then places the titanium implant fixture. The implant is then covered (either with sutures or left exposed, depending on the protocol), and you’re given post-operative instructions and pain medication. The surgery typically takes 20-30 minutes. You return home the same day and experience mild discomfort and swelling over the next few days.

How long do I have to wait before the implant crown is placed?

After implant surgery, you must wait for osseointegration, the bone’s integration with the implant, which typically takes 3-4 months. This waiting period is essential for the implant to achieve stability and success. During this time, you wear a temporary restoration (if visible) to maintain appearance and function. After the healing period, the Altoona Smiles team takes impressions or scans and has a custom crown fabricated, which takes 2-4 weeks. Then the crown is bonded to the implant, completing treatment. Some accelerated protocols allow crown placement sooner with proper planning.

How do I care for a tooth implant after placement?

Once your implant is fully restored with a crown, you care for it like a natural tooth, brush twice daily, floss once daily, and visit the Altoona Smiles team for regular check-ups (typically twice yearly). You should avoid chewing on hard objects or using your teeth as tools. Excellent oral hygiene and regular professional cleanings help maximize implant longevity. Unlike natural teeth, implants cannot develop decay, but the bone and gum supporting the implant can become infected if oral hygiene is poor, so maintaining excellent hygiene is essential.

What happens if my implant fails?

Implant failure (where the implant does not integrate with bone or becomes unstable) is uncommon (less than 5%) with proper patient selection and surgical technique. If an implant fails, it can be removed and a new implant can typically be placed after adequate healing. However, implant failure is rare enough that most patients should not be concerned if they’re an ideal candidate and follow post-operative instructions carefully. The Altoona Smiles team discusses risk factors during consultation.
